Things to do in the Mudgee Region

The Mudgee area has a wide range of activities for all walks of life. An award-winning wine region, Mudgee has plenty of fine wine and food for even the most discerning palette. For Arts and Crafts lovers, there are a number of local artists and galleries. Near-by towns hold a variety of hidden treasures and there are plenty of options for the outdoors enthusiast including easy access to National Parks, watersports, golf and fishing.

Wineries and Food

For those who appreciate award winning quality wine the many local wineries hold delightful surprises. The first grapes were grown in the 1820's and whilst there are now many wineries which welcome interested visitors, the relaxed and friendly approach has never changed. The annual Mudgee Wine Festival is held in September, and there are many other events throughout the year at the various wineries. Fine food is also available throughout the region including locally made cheeses, olives, honey, fruits and more.

Gulgong

Gulgong, the town on the original 10 Dollar note, is a town rich in history. When gold was discovered near here in 1870, Gulgong soon became home to 2000 people. Much of the original architecture (and atmosphere) still remains today, and gold fossicking is still carried on near Gulgong, Hargraves and other interesting towns in the area. Attractions in Gulgong include the Pioneer Museum, Prince of Wales Opera House and the Henry Lawson Centre.

Regional Gems

For more history, visit historic Hill End. Another "gold rush" town, Hill End is a pleasant day round trip from Old Wallinga, and has an interesting Museum. There is also the Hill End Pub, and the creeks in the area still yield a bit of "colour" to the persistent gold fossicker!
For something different, take a trip to Wellington to see the caves and the Phosphate mine, or go to Dubbo's Western Plains Zoo. All these places are close enough so on your return you can put the kids to bed perhaps, and enjoy the evenings as you wish.
